“Wartime Soldier, Conflicted Mom”  by Lizette Alvarez in the New York Times is part of a series of articles on how the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have redefined the role of women in the military.  This follows a story by David Kocieniewski , “Soldier’s Service Leads to a Custody Battle at Home,” focused on the parenting disputes that may follow deployments.  Here’s a Times editorial, “After Iraq, the Battle at Home”, which concludes that “Congress and the states need to consider legislation to protect all service members’ custody rights. The Pentagon should examine how it can enforce — not just help draft — family care plans.”
